Edgar Allen Long, Jr,81, of Stillwater. Oklahoma passed into eternity on Sunday, January 30 at his home in Stillwater shortly after midnight. Dighton-Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater has been entrusted with the funeral services.
Edgar was born on June 26, 1940, in Pawnee, Oklahoma to Edgar Allen Long Sr and Lucy Davis Long. He was the only boy with three sisters: Fran, Edie, and Kay. He received most of his formal education in Pawnee before attending Stillwater High School for his last two years, graduating in 1958. In high school, he was tall and lanky and loved to play sports including football, baseball, basketball, and running track where he won many medals and awards. He then attended Oklahoma State University where he studied business and engineering and was a member of the ROTC.
He married his high school sweetheart, Diane Powell in El Reno. Oklahoma in 1959 and to this union three children were added. Even though the married ended they continued to be friends through the years.
Edgar was a bit of a jack of all trades. He started out doing one of his passions, cooking for restaurants; then he was a painter for Chuck’s Paint and Paper which lead to him becoming a professional house painter. He was considered one of the best at this craft until his retirement. He had his own painting business for 25 years, painting homes, businesses, and fraternity and sorority houses. He also sold cars for a time and he was a top salesman for a Ford deale1·. He later worked for his father-in-law’s Don Powell Conoco Station as a mechanic. During the oil boom, he worked in the oil rig business.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, cooking, grilling, gardening, and being in the out-of-doors. He loved Alaska and everything about it. He enjoyed watching all the Alaskan Survival Shows. He volunteered his time at the Valley of Hope in Cushing and M.AD.D. of Stillwater where he made many long-term friendships.
Edgar had a great sense of humor and wit and enjoyed pulling pranks on his friends and family. He also enjoyed telling stories, often about the pranks he had pulled1
While he was not actively involved in a local church. he attended several around the area and enjoyed reading the Bible, collecting and sharing scripture quotes as a form of encouragement. He also used them for himself, posting them around the house where he would see them when he needed an uplifting word.
He is survived by his children, Laurie Long Ferreira and her husband Fernando of Barcelona, Spain, Kirk Long of Altus, Oklahoma, and Amy James and her husband Bryan of Verdigris, Oklahoma. He is also survived by his siblings, Fran Mihura of Stillwater, OK; Edgarita Long of Tahlequah, OK; and Kay Taylor.
Edgar was very proud of his grandchildren who include Jennifer Lewis-Birchfield of Stillwater; Nicole Gray Hart of London, England, Sarah Long Ferreira of Barcelona, Spain, Miguel Long Ferreira of Barcelona, Spain, Kristen Stock of Stillwater; Kirk Long Jr of Hobart, Ok, Kaitlin Long of Altus, OK; Merina Long of Altus, OK; Noah James of Verdigris, OK; Alex James of Verdigris, OK and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Edgar Allen Long, Sr and Lucy Davis Long.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, February 7. 2022 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at 11 AM with a reception to follow at the Dighton Marler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 2:00 PM.
