Building Safer Roads Together: Pawnee Nation Launches Comprehensive Safety Action Plan
The Pawnee Nation is taking an important step toward improving transportation safety across our communities through the development of a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP). This effort is made possible through a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) planning grant awarded by the United States Department of Transportation.
The SS4A program is a nationwide initiative focused on reducing roadway fatalities and serious injuries through data-driven planning, community engagement, and strategic safety investments. Through this grant, the Pawnee Nation will work to better understand local safety challenges and identify practical solutions that make travel safer for everyone.
The CSAP will employ a data driven, Safe System Approach to examine crash patterns, identify high-risk locations, evaluate safety protocols and design practices, and recommend strategies that protect all roadway users. The Safe System Approach builds multiple layers of protection through safer roads, people, vehicles, speeds and post-crash care to account for human error, reduce the severity of crashes and ultimately eliminate roadway deaths and serious injuries.
What the Safety Action Plan Will Do
The CSAP will serve as a long-term strategy to improve transportation safety by:
- Analyzing crash data and roadway conditions
- Identifying locations with the highest safety risks
- Evaluating infrastructure needs such as signage, lighting, crossings, and roadway design
- Prioritizing improvements that can prevent serious injuries and fatalities
- Developing safety projects and policies for future implementation
- Creating a framework to pursue future funding for safety improvements
The plan will emphasize proactive solutions that address safety concerns before crashes occur, helping to build a safer transportation system for current and future generations.
Community Input Is Essential
Throughout the planning process, there will be opportunities to share feedback through the Community Input Survey and public outreach events. Community members will be asked to identify areas where they feel unsafe, describe safety concerns, and suggest improvements that could make travel safer and more accessible. Everyone who travels, works or depends on transportation systems in the Pawnee Nation CSAP Study Area is encouraged to participate. Public input will help ensure the final plan reflects local priorities and community needs.
