Closing Announcement

June 19th (Juneteenth) is a federal holiday because it commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans. On that date in 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
