Pawnee, Oklahoma, September 19, 2024 — On May 28, 2024, the Pawnee Nation proudly passed a proclamation to become a Purple Heart Community. This honor reflects Pawnee Nation’s deep admiration, respect, and unwavering gratitude for the men and women who have selflessly served their country, Tribal Nation, and community in the Armed Forces.

The Pawnee Nation has a long and distinguished history of warriors who have served in the military, and this recognition is a testament to their bravery and sacrifices. The Pawnee Nation Flag honors these warriors, depicting the numerous military conflicts in which the Pawnee people have fought, starting with the Pawnee Scouts during the Indian Wars.

“We are deeply grateful for the sacrifices made by our veterans, who have paid the high price of freedom by leaving their families, communities, and even giving their lives so that we may continue to serve our people,” said President Nuttle, Pawnee Business Council. “Their courage and dedication do not go unnoticed.”

The Purple Heart, the oldest military decoration still in use, was initially established as the Badge of Military Merit by General George Washington in 1782. The Pawnee Nation is proud to recognize its own Purple Heart recipients, who have been wounded in combat while defending our freedoms.

Dr. Gene Evans, Member Seat #3, a Pawnee veteran, accepted the new signage on behalf of the Pawnee Business Council. The signs, which read “Pawnee Tribe Purple Heart Reservation,” are now displayed at both bridge entrances to the Pawnee Nation grounds.

By becoming a Purple Heart Community, the Pawnee Nation reaffirms its commitment to honoring and supporting its veterans, ensuring that their sacrifices are remembered and respected for generations to come.
